Roughly fifty cars have been marked with what seems to be human blood in the German town of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by police.
Automobiles, walls and postal boxes were marked, occasionally with swastikas, they reported in a statement.
Officers say they were notified late on Wednesday night, when a individual noticed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored liquid.
The substance had been applied in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they reported.
Police then found numerous other smeared cars and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are illegal in Germany under legislation outlawing the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police report preliminary tests show the substance was likely blood from a person.
"Currently there is no clue as to where it came from; investigators are currently not informed of any injuries in connection with the event," they commented.
Municipal representatives stated they were attempting "to resolve the case" and have appealed to the residents for details.
A senior official said the attack made him without words and had to be addressed promptly.
"This event strikes at the center of Hanau and revives the pain of the extremist violent incident in 2020," he wrote on social media, referring to the death of nine victims by a shooter targeting people of foreign heritage in February 2020.
