Wimbledon Adopts Video Review System in 2025.

Wimbledon court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.

Video review technology will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the option to question particular calls made by the official, mirroring the system already in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step follows just a year after the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.

A Recent Example

A recent case took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further change at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where spectators have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
